The Vessel

The Vessel is a theater show written and performed by artists from several different countries such as, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Guinea, Panama, Brazil, United States and Canada. In this work, they come together to pay a tribute to dear people they lost.

Created by Jasmine Pisapia and Katiana Rangel and directed by Richard Maxwell, The Vessel is part of Incoming Theater Division (ITD), a branch of the theater company New York City Players (NYCP) founded by the playwright and director Richard Maxwell in 1999. ITD’s highly diverse creative collective reunites for the 6th consecutive year around the co-creation of an original work. In 2021, given the departure of many of ITD members from the city in a time of global loss, we decided to create a work that expresses and reflects upon the concept of “absence” in our lives—the absence of others felt in the physical space around us, as much as in our minds and hearts.
